SWEETER THAN HONEY
THE SWEETNESS OF HIS MOUTH
“His
mouth is most
sweet” (Song of Solomon 5:16).
To
those that know the Lord Jesus
Christ as their Savior; to those that have an intimate and personal
relationship with Him; to those only has it be given to testify that
truly “his
mouth is most sweet.” They alone have tasted the sweetnesses
of “the
kisses of his mouth” (chapter 1, verse 2); then also what He
speaks to
those that are His; for “how sweet are thy words unto my
taste! yea, sweeter
than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103).
1) The sweetness of His mouth
expresses the greatness
of His love for those He loves. It is only true love that sweetens the
kiss of
one to the other because of the love that now exists between the Lord
and His
people: “We love him, because he first loved us” (1
John 4:16); for His “love
is better than wine” (Song 1:2). As Matthew Henry says: ‘The
kisses of
his mouth, all the tokens of his love, have a transcendent sweetness in
them,
and are most delightful to those who have their spiritual senses
exercised. To
you that believe he is precious.’
2) Then, the sweetness of His
mouth is the glorious
and precious truths of His Word that He speaks to us. It is true that
there are
times that His Word may be bitter; but oh! How sweet it is whenever we
hear the
wonderful truths of His Gospel of Love, Grace, Forgiveness, Salvation,
Peace,
etc. Even at times that He has to rebuke and correct us for our errors;
even
then, His Words are sweetness to our souls; for they are “pleasant
words...as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul,”
and as “health to the bones” (Proverbs
16:24). That being true to the believer, we can then say with the
prophet: “Thy
words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy
and
rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of
hosts” (Jeremiah
15:16). Amen.
